Introduction To Pickup

In 2005 Neil Strauss AKA Style brought the art of picking up women into the mainstream with his best-selling book, The Game. In this book he told of how he had gone from being a dateless average frustrated chump (AFC) to a smooth seducer of women known in the community as a pick up artist (PUA).

This community had once operated completely underground and out of the public eye. Known by virtually no one, of a small number of individuals were working tirelessly at creating techniques and strategies to help transform themselves. And they were succeeding. Strauss spent years learning from the then best PUAs in the world, and eventually transformed from a geeky balding chump into a smooth seducer of women. He then proceeded to lift the lid on this world with his best-selling book, and the pick-up community was propelled into the spotlight, changing from being a seedy underground community, that was largely unheard of, into a global phenomenon. Scores of imitators started their own seduction schools across the world, and almost overnight millions of men starting approaching women and asking for their opinion on something.

PUAs mentioned in The Game, like Tyler Durden and Mystery went on to start their own schools of seduction but take a back seat in terms of actually delivering live training. There is still a lot of disagreement in the community, with stories of public arguments, nervous break downs and various other drama often associated with these early pioneers.

At 25 years old, Richard La Ruina had only kissed two girls and had lost his virginity at 21. He would sit in his house, with no friends, no social life, and no hope of getting a girlfriend. One day by chance he and his cousin Alistair ran into a bootcamp in a Leicester Square coffee shop. There were a group of men, all of whom were carrying papers with detailed graphics on how to approach and talk to women. Gambler was intrigued and decided to delve into the area - searching online, buying books, and devouring up all the information that he could find.

At first, Richard went out and used canned openers and pre-scripted conversation, but the results weren't as effective as they might have been. He felt that a one-size-fits-all approach to women was never going to be as effective as a flexible system which reacted based on what women gave you back. Over time he developed The System as a kind of "Pickup 2.0" which focuses on a structured but natural style of game, one that is more honest, normal, and much more effective.

The pick-up business still has a bad reputation in the eyes of some, with accusations of objectifying women, or just being a discipline practiced by geeky losers. Unfortunately this reputation isn't entirely undeserved, and there some men who have become bitter because of their lack of success with the opposite sex, and so have an unhealthy attitude to women. However, this by no means applies the majority, and it is very possible to find trainers and wingmen who love women and are just looking to feel more in control of their love life.

The current crop of PUAs are much more in this vein, having come from regular places, rather than secret online message boards. Not just geeky losers, pick up is now for celebrities, millionnaires, students, business men, and every type of man, united with the common goal of wanting to get this area of their life handled.

The future of pick up could possibly see it becoming as mainstream as having a personal fitness trainer or going to martial arts class. The only issues that it faces are the social stigma and the amount of courage it takes for a man to step up and take action. Time has shown that anyone with a positive attitude and average or better intelligence will be able to rapidly show improvement in this area.

Wingman: your partner in crime (useful for mixed sets and to occupy potential blocks)

Day 2: a date following n-close

Example Pick-Up Routine

We don't use routines or canned material anymore - we are direct, but it is a great way to get started. Students will usually start with a routine so that they know what they are going to say and don't have to think on the spot until they are more comfortable. A simple routine that was successfully used by us is:

Become A PUA

The natural progression from AFC to MPUA will usually follow these steps depending on pre-existing skills and how you direct your energy.

Game improvement from practice:

Nothing. Nada
Can date within social circle when girl makes it VERY obvious.' Physical escalation slow.' Boring dates
Gets the guts to approach in clubs after long time staring at girl giving him IOIs, low success rate
Learns how to approach easy sets in a club and get occasional n-close, but most stale out before then and most numbers flake
Can get into comfort on date.' Good rapport but sometimes run out of things to say.' No idea how to escalate.' Miss lots of opportunities
Can approach a bit more, but still with nerves that they can see.' No kino, go for kisses etc awkwardly on date 3 or something
Can approach cold and gain interest and establish rapport.' Cannot isolate or handle a group. No game for a noisy club.' Can only number close or occasional k-close on a first meeting
Can do quite good day-approaches with some success
Can approach and isolate with a wing.' Can get rapport, and can use basic kino and k-close
Can isolate and escalate kino but too slowly, can get k-close and f-close with easier targets. (At this point you can quit and already be better than 99% and have this area handled enough for it not to be a worry any more)
Dance floor game - approach, escalate, extract.' In 2 minutes
Can f-close easier targets but useless on day 2 when energy level drops - cannot ramp it back up
Master day 2 game (80%+ f-close rate)
Can handle a group approach and isolate without a wing. Rarely blown-out.
Learn non-verbal pick-up
Learn how to lead, escalate, quickly isolate
Able to open, build comfort, escalate, extract, close in any environment including daytime same day f-close
Threesomes, women chasing you, 5 in a week, etc etc.' You made it!

The Game: is the intro to PU, but in terms of useful info, it is light.
Comedy Writing Secrets: teaches you how to be funny. If you apply it, it works.
Uncommon therapy: is an intro to Milton Erickson, the genius who NLP and much of influence in communication is based on.
Impro: is a great book for helping to be spontaneous and features great stuff on status.
Speed Reading People: teaches you how to read any person accurately using Myers Briggs, if you put in the work, you can cold read people amazingly accurately.
The Selfish Gene: puts reproduction in a biological way that stops you thinking too much about doing something natural.
Frogs Into Prince, and Introduction to NLP: Two good places to start in NLP.
Absolute Pleasure: is the best of a bad bunch in this area.
An Actor Prepares: is the classic acting book about getting into role, it's useful generally but relating to PU for state control, story-telling, etc.
The Mystery Method: book will be a much better starting place than The Game in terms of useful info.
The Cube: is some chick crack, but it actually works and tells you true things about them!
The Alphabet of Manliness: you need those masculine qualities sometimes.
Handwriting Analysis: is the bible of handwriting analysis books.
Prometheus Rising: is a personal choice, it is one of Gambler's 5 favourite books and is life-changing.
Teach Yourself Alexander Technique: is worth a look for posture. Neil Strauss/Style studied Alexander Technique. Taken too far the posture is not very manly, a little bit though will help you stand straight and look your best.
Art of Seduction: is from the writer of 48 laws of power, it has some interesting ideas but is quite heavy. Influence is the classic for sales, marketing, and influencing people. Recommended by David D and given to students of Style's Annihilation Method.
Way of the Superior Man: is by the excellent David Deida, we also recommend his audio products available on his website.
Seamm Jesani: is very good for relaxation, energy, and all that cool stuff. Gambler uses the breathing exercises.
Roger Dodger: is the closest we have to a PUA film.
