What will we learn about Mystery from Sesaon 2 of VH1s The Pick Up Artist?
When Neil Strauss first met Mystery he described him as ‘a computer geek who had been bitten by a vampire and was half way through his transformation.’ Mystery certainly cuts an imposing figure, always peacocking and wearing something that is likely to ellicit a comment from a girl, making it easier to start a conversation.
He is rarely seen without his trademark eye liner, cowboy hat, googles, platform boots, flowing over coat, and wrist straps, along with a host of various other things that he wears in order to attract women and stand out from other men.
Strauss went along to do a boot camp in order to research his book, The Game, and his ensuing transformation from geek to one of the best PUAs in the world is now part of PU legend. However, it’s debatable how much credibility Mystery gained from the book. Whilst his success with women was not in question, Strauss pulled no punches when describing Mystery’s nervous break down, and it could be arged that he was represented as someone who is so focused on running game and getting laid, that he had begun to loose sight of reality.
It’s also been said that his methods have quickly become outdated, and that peacocking to such an extreme now looks like a transparent attempt to get attention from women, and could actually backfire, partly due to the popularity of The Game.
It will be interesting to see how Mystery comes across in the second series of VH1s The Pick Up Artist. Obviously it will be a staged platform for him to flex his ego, but it will also be a test of sorts. To what extent will Mystery’s tecniques actually be able to help these guys?
More and more people in the PUA community are beginning to learn that there is no ‘magic routine’ for getting girls, like they once did. Back in the early days, guys who didn’t like socialising, and had little interest in actually talking to other people, thought their sexual salvation lay in unleashing a series of ‘super powered routines’ laced with NLP, which would guarantee that they never got rejected again. At one point in time, this actually seemed realistic. After all, one of the champions of the game was Mystery himself, a 21 year old virgin, who had reinvented his look and personality to become one of the best seducers in the world based on peacocking, routines and negs. At lot of guys assumed that if it had worked for him, then it would surely work for them.
In the last season of The Pick Up Artist Mystery still advocated practicing a highly structured system of routines, and behavioural patterns in order to get the girl. Whislt they may work for him, it’s debatable to what extent these techniques work for everyone else. After all, being really good with women involves being good with people, and being a better person in general, not just mastering a ‘magic routine’ and dressing differently to paper over the cracks of someone who is bad socially.
Most PUAs would agree that once you’ve hooked a girl’s interest, it doesn’t really matter what you say, as long as you’re confident and engaging. Being able to embrace the moment and vibe with people is a big part of what’s really important. A few good openers and lines will help a little bit, but they’re by no means the whole picutre. It will be interesting to see if VH1’s The Pick Up Artist reflects this.

Yawn. Yet keybored jockey who has never run scripted game, and thinks it doesn’t work.
Yeah, could be interesting to see if the second season of the pick up artist is a little more “natural” i mean, he have a reputation tu mantain and it would be backfiring him if he didn´t play with routines and structure, is like taking everything he said before back, however is true that the game and the comunity is every day more exposed, the girls are more aware and sometimes they even had been opened with one or another routine before, so… i incline myself a lot more for the Natural game, if its inherent in you and you born a natural perfect, if you learned to be natural, that´s good too, is the same thing but in a shorter amount of time, and a natural doesn´t have to worry about being busted runing this or that routine, just gonna enjoy the moment.
POKER
I think its so important to just get out there and freestyle. Not bothering with routines at all. Since I’ve tried this I’ve developed loads of confidence and competence in my ability to socialise. Eventually you create your own routines, as conversations follow similar paths, which you use subconsciously. It makes conversations for me much more fun when I don’t know where they are going, and this keeps me more motivated to continue gaming.
